Catholic Social Teaching

What is Catholic Social Teaching?

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) helps us to understand how our faith guides the way we live and treat others. It teaches us how to build a fair, kind and loving world, where everyone is respected and cared for.

At our school, CST is at the heart of everything we do, in our lessons, our relationships and how we serve others.

Our faith calls us to love God and to love our neighbours in every situation, especially our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we hope to make present in our unjust and broken world, the justice, love and peace of God.

There are nine CST principles, which are linked to characters to aid the pupils' understanding. These are:

At St Anne’s, we teach our children to understand how Jesus’ teachings connect to doing good deeds. We encourage them to put others’ needs before their own, for example by supporting Epsom and Ewell Foodbank, Mission Together, The Royal British Legion (Poppy Appeal), and CAFOD. We also care for God’s world by planting seeds in Banstead, making bird boxes and feeders, and reminding everyone not to waste electricity and why this matters.

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is part of many subjects, not just RE. Our Celebrations of the Word often includes CST, where we talk about world events and how faith guides our response. Children often lead on charity events and projects with adult support, to promote CST and its principles.

We teach our pupils that we must work together to build a better world for the future.
